Crusaders: BNP IT Warfare Unit

May 17th, 2006 · Posted by Skuds in Technology · 4 Comments · Technology

Today I had an e-mail from the “BNP IT Warfare Unit”. Actually I had 10 e-mails from them, all addressed to the Crawley UAF address.

In itself, 10 e-mails is not much of an annoyance, I get more than that from Wordpress telling me of spam comments which need moderating (I have now turned off notification for that!) but there are a few interesting speculations about all this.

Firstly, are the BNP really trying to flood the mailboxes of those known to be against them, or is it a sympathiser acting on his own? Do they really think that 10 e-mails in a day is an effective DDOS attack? Nice job though - very well-spoofed headers, with all 10 mails purporting to come from 10 different spurious addresses in different countries, and 10 different x-reply-to addresses showing a sense of humour: addresses in the NHS, Merton council, John Prescott and South Wales police, for example.

I guess that much more prominent organisations like the Lancaster UAF are getting the same thing.

What a typical BNP-type name though… “Crusaders”, with its little nod to the anti-muslim crusades.

On the whole I am quite pleased to see that they have recognised the futility of attempting rational argument to back up their irrational views. I can only see the existance of an “IT Warfare Unit” as being an act of surrender rather than an act of aggression.

    Hi Skuds

Oddly enough, we haven’t received any of these yet - though I have heard of one poor sod who ended up with thousands of them. Still, spam-defender software up and running just in case!
I like your last comment - ‘I can only see the existance of an “IT Warfare Unit” as being an act of surrender rather than an act of aggression.’
    So true.

Keep up the good work. :-)

Sadly, an Orwellesque “IT Warfare Unit” exists within the ‘Security Services’ of the ‘International Community’ (but it’s called by another name). It is aggressive, and shows no sign of surrendering…

Have you been on the receiving end then Richard?

‘Warning shots’ only - thus far.
